在日常交流中,外国人常说的“not half”千万别理解成“不是一半”,否则就会贻笑大方啦。请看:
“not half”有两个非常矛盾的含义:
(1)第一个含义: “not half”英文解释:used in spoken English to express a positive statement more strongly,中文即“(加强肯定语气的口语表达)非常,很,完全地,彻底地”,相当于:quite , very, very much, a lot, to a considerable degree, completely, absolutely 或 entirely .“ 此时在英语口语中可以用在形容词(副词)或名词的前面,起到加强语气的作用(尤其在英国英语中)。如:
It’s not half cold today. 今天很冷。
It isn’t half windy.风刮得很大。
The show was not half good.
这场表演很好。
The paper you wrote is not half good.
你写的这篇文章棒极了。
It wasn't half crowded in the club last night.
昨晚俱乐部里人多得不得了。
It wasn't half crowded in the English Corner on Friday evening.
英语角周五晚上人特别多。
I am not half tired after the long trip.
长途旅行以后,我疲惫不堪。
Do you like chocolates ? Oh, not half.
你喜欢吃巧克力吗》啊,非常喜欢。
She doesn’t half swear.她破口大骂。
=She quite swears
(2)第二个含义:not at all 中文即“一点也不,一点都不,根本不是,远远不”,如:
The food’s not half bad.这食物很好。(特别是与bad连用就是这个含义)
The outcome of the experiment was not half bad.
试验的结果相当好。
Your room is not half bad.
你的房间相当好。
This book, which is written by a rather unknown young writer, is not half bad.
这本书是一个沒有名气的年轻作家所写,写得很是不错。
Stop piling it on: it's not half as bad as you make it appear.
别夸大其词了,事情根本不象你所说的那么坏。

当形容词或副词后面有enough时,not half也是此种用法和含义:
